SL Teaching Principles Research Study and Teaching Principles Document
Between May 2018 and January 2020, SL teachers were engaged in a qualitative research study on an in-depth exploration of SL teaching principles. The study was coordinated by Jacqueline Einer and Deniz Kurtoğlu Eken through a collaborative, inclusive and voluntary approach to data collection and data analysis. The research goal was to explore and draw up SL’s teaching principles both at an individual and institutional level: What are our key teaching principles as perceived by SL instructors?
We approached this from teachers’ perspectives because the data we sought came from our teaching experiences and beliefs. The key research tools used in the study were an online survey with eight open-ended questions focusing on teaching experiences, perceptions and beliefs; document and corpus analysis; and exploratory group discussions over a 15-month period.

In June 2021, the SL carried out research with SL students to explore students’ perceptions of SL teaching principles through a focus group interview.
Following transcription analysis, compartive analysis with the teacher version and several stages of feedback from students, the SL published its Student Version of the SL Teaching Principles in September 2021.
